The Project is Underway

The exciting news was just announced that all legislative approvals are in order to break ground on this scenic way to experience Baja. There were initial reports this could technically become an international route by starting in San Diego, but it sounds like those plans were scrapped.

It is expected that this train will service at least 25000 passengers each day with plans to operate from 6 AM to 11 PM every 30 minutes. The reason behind such high expectations is the numerous enchanting stops along the way. Whether passengers choose to go from one end to another or stop in between, this region of Mexico has so much to offer.

Official news from Federal Representative, Alfredo Porras Dominguez, states there will be 11 stops along a scenic route across the Mexican states of Baja California and Baja California Sur. The goal is to create a direct route between peninsulas to showcase the beauty of Baja life.

However, travelers interested in going on this adventure shouldn’t hold their breath! The railway system isn’t expected to be complete for at least 4 years.

First Stop: Tijuana

Tijuana makes a great starting point or end point for foodies, beachgoers, and anyone up for a good time! While Tijuana hasn’t always had the best reputation, tourists who stay on the beaten path should feel safe and enjoy their time at the entryway to Baja. It is the most visited border city in the world, after all! It’s also an easy gateway to cross into the U.S., as sunny San Diego is a short trip across the border.

Second Stop: Ensenada

Just 75 miles south of Tijuana lies the chill cruise port town of Ensenada. This relaxing destination is known as the “Cinderella to the Pacific,” with impeccable seafood, wine, and weather that mirrors the Mediterranean.

Third Stop: San Pedro Martir

Not far outside of Ensenada lies the rugged mountain range of San Pedro Martir. This area is a perfect example of the goal to showcase what Baja is all about. Getting here is not an easy trek, so the train will make it much more accessible to outdoor enthusiasts.

Fifth Stop: Guerrero Negro

Guerrero Negro is the first stop in the state of Baja California Sur. A small town, yet the largest in the area, is located on the edge of the desert with crystal blue waters to enjoy. They are known for their whale-watching tours and scenic lagoons.

Sixth Stop: Santa Rosalia

This small town of roughly 14,000 residents is the type of place one would see on a postcard and say, “take me there.” With beautiful historical churches to gaze upon and lovely blue waters, Santa Rosalia is a must-see destination.

Seventh Stop: Ciudad Constitution

This town is in the middle of Baja California Sur, a no-frills town that serves as an access point to the nearby Magdalena Bay and the San Borjitas Cave Paintings, which are definitely worth a visit.

Eighth Stop: La Paz

Quite possibly, the most beautiful stopping point along this train route is the town of La Paz. Sometimes overshadowed by Cabo, this small beach town is known for its scenic views, amazing cuisine, and varieties of local art.

Ninth Stop: Todos Santos

Todos Santos is an art lover’s paradise. Surrounded by the scenic Sierra de Laguna mountains, this small picturesque town packs a big punch. There are many galleries, colorful artisan shops, and museums to choose from. The kempt beaches are usually uncrowded except for surfers enjoying the big waves.
